I worked with a young couple to combine their two very different styles after moving in together. His bulky masculine aesthetic just didn’t jive with her dreams of an art deco, funky, modern and feminine space. The existing modular sofa and TV console had to stay, so I started by focusing on the small details; texture, color, and depth. To draw the eye away from the oversized sofa, I sourced a burgundy lacquered coffee table and a variety of different patterned throw pillows. We ditched the overhead can lighting for a statement sconce on one side of the sofa and a table lamp on the other to add an asymmetrical element to the space. The room had a very low ceiling and not much direct light so I leaned into this by painting the walls a deep forest green, highlighted with velvet curtain panels in a slightly darker hue. Lastly, I wanted to feature my client’s impressive collective of vintage art. After many iterations, we decided on the rendered layout you see below.
